The Power List 2019 – Mentors
Adam Mapani
Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow UCL Department of Clinical Ophthalmology and Nurse Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Medical Retina Department, London, UK.
Who have been your mentors?
I have been privileged to work with inspiring colleagues at Moorfields nursing division, Moorfields consultant body and management. The mentors I have worked with closely are: Catherine Egan, Tendai Gwenhure, Robin Hamilton, Mildred Johnson, Ranjan Ranjendram, Tunde Peto, and Jenny Norsek.
What was the luckiest break of your career?
I have been very fortunate to have the trust and confidence of my peers and colleagues, who have supported and promoted me in my career journey as founder and chairman of the UK Intravitreal Injection Group, Co-Chair of the Alliance Ophthalmic Network (AON), Co-Chair of the Moorfields Eye Hospital ANTI-VEGF preceptorship, and Chair of Moorfields External Intravitreal Injection course, both nationally and internationally. The fact that I have received more than 10 awards in 16 years of my career has helped enormously. The ANTI-VEGF research breakthrough, and the role of the allied healthcare professionals involved in it, created multiple opportunities for me.
What would be a piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
Do what you love and you will love what you do.
What’s the best part of working in the field of ophthalmology?
People’s sight matters: it’s a privilege and honour to make a difference in people’s lives. I enjoy hearing patient stories and helping them maintain their independence through sight improvement – being able to drive and perform other daily activities means a lot to my patients.
