Past Chief and Chair of The Department of Ophthalmology of The Antwerp University Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium

A past president of the EBO and the ESCRS, and the pioneer of bag-in-the-lens cataract surgery which avoids PCO, Marie-José is also a keen proponent of the need for ophthalmologists to understand physiology and the physics of optics, and she’s behind the development of a novel femtosecond laser floater treatment method.

What are your goals for the future?

“Unravel the role of the Berger space, its variations in anatomy and its role in accommodation. It is definitely the space into which the bag-in-the-lens is positioned (provided there is no dysgenesis).”

What has been your most successful collaboration?

“The believers in the bag-in-the-lens, starting from the manufacturer to later on the users. This journey was not without difficulties and yet, the same difficulties arise currently to convince the ophthalmologists and industry, that patients with floaters must be better understood before considering them as hypochondria.”

What have been your career highlights?

“Looking back, I realize that my biggest achievement was to work in harmony with colleagues from the department of ophthalmology of Antwerp and other European centers or even international centers.”
