The Power List 2021 – Power List

SERI Professor of Ophthalmology Research at Duke-NUS Medical School, USA and Singapore Eye Research Institute, Singapore

What is your proudest professional achievement?

My research on the prevention of high myopia and associated visual complications in the population and the public health impact of the modification of risk factors and treatments to slow myopia progression to prevent high myopia is tremendous. Millions will benefit from a lower prevalence of high myopia worldwide as the burden of high-myopia-related visual impairment will be reduced.

Outside of ophthalmology, what makes you happy?

My joys are my faith and my family, with a supportive husband, two lovely adult daughters and son-in-law.

Why is it important that we celebrate women in the field this way?

This celebration highlights the achievements and successes of women who understand the unique struggles faced by other women in this field. In turn, this will inspire and encourage junior female ophthalmologists and others. As an Asian woman, I would like to support other women, especially those in Asian countries, and motivate them to aspire towards their goals.
