What is your proudest professional achievement?
I was delighted to be appointed as the UK’s first Professor of Ophthalmic Epidemiology in 2010 because this signalled the coming of age of this key scientific discipline in the UK.
Outside of ophthalmology, what makes you happy?
Family (first and always), friends, any opportunity to dance, a good night’s sleep, and a job well done.
What can be done to make the field more diverse?
We all need to be looking around the room and challenging ourselves as to whether we really have the best possible team for the task at hand. If we all look alike and sound alike, then we probably also think alike – so where is the added value of us all being in the room? And if we all think alike, then how can we possibly know if we aren’t the best team for the job? We all need to #ChoosetoChallenge.
