The Power List 2021 – Power List

Director cum Chief Consultant, OSB Eye Hospital, Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Why is it important that we celebrate women in the field?

Women are now playing a very important role in providing ophthalmic service globally. In recent years a number of female ophthalmologists have contributed to preventing blindness by providing leadership in their respective countries and regions. I think this recognition by The Ophthalmologist will not only provide tremendous boost and encouragement to those hard working individuals in their relentless endeavors, but, more importantly, inspire more women to step up and follow in their footsteps and beyond.

What can be done to make the field more diverse?

I believe we are fortunate to be living in a time where social stigma and restrictions are being challenged every day. Movements such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter have transcended geographical borders and challenged the status quo around the world. I think as professionals, we have a moral responsibility to raise our voice against inequality and social injustice in getting access to quality ophthalmic services. Raising awareness in different parts of the globe by reaching out and encouraging participation from all genders and races will go a long way. We are blessed to be living in the age of information. We should use all the tools at our disposal to promote the worldview of diversity and equality to ensure universal eye health care for all.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

From being the first ever woman ophthalmologist fellow in Bangladesh to becoming the first woman President Elect of APAO, I had many proud moments in my career. But if I have to choose, I will have to mention these two “firsts.”

Outside of work, what makes you happy?

After balancing work and life, I enjoy spending time with my family and attending social events. I enjoy being active and outdoors, travel, cycling and kayaking trips with my husband, snowboarding with my son, hiking with my daughters, and cooking and sharing meals with family and friends.
