“As Director of the NIHR Moorfields Clinical Research Facility, this year represented a peak in activity and impact. We saw a record number of grant applications submitted, with strong success rates translating into increased research income and a growing portfolio of hosted and sponsored studies. The facility supported a greater number of active clinical studies than in previous years, reflecting both increased capacity and confidence from funders and collaborators.
“In my role as Vascular Theme Co-Lead of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, I was proud to help establish an Ocular BioBank, a major strategic advance for translational research. In 2025, we achieved a record collection of over 700 aqueous humour samples, significantly enhancing our research capability for biomarker discovery and drug development. This resource has already begun to support high-impact collaborations and positions us strongly for future therapeutic innovation.
“The year also marked the conclusion of my four-year term as Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. I was particularly pleased to see a record number of attendees at the RCOphth Annual Congress in May 2025, reflecting the strength and relevance of the scientific programme developed during my tenure and the growing engagement of the ophthalmic community.
“Alongside my co-leads, I was delighted to be successful in securing a multi-million-pound grant focused on testing and refining clinical endpoints in age-related macular degeneration. This work addresses a critical barrier to therapeutic progress. Building on this, I now co-Chair the Bridge Consortium, bringing together academics, industry partners, and patient groups to evaluate and redefine clinical trial endpoints for non-neovascular age-related macular degeneration and macular ischaemia.
“I was honored to receive several prestigious awards, including the Moorfields Chair’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Moorfields (2025), the Goldmann Lecture Award in Switzerland (2025), the Bowman Lecture at the RCOphth Annual Congress (2025), and the Macula Society Paul Henkind Memorial Lecture (2025)..
“Finally, after seven years as Editor-in-Chief of Eye, I stepped down in December 2025 with great satisfaction, having overseen sustained growth in impact factor, downloads, diversity of authorship and readership, and a truly global editorial board. With over 640 publications to date and multiple collaborations globally, I remain deeply committed to advancing ophthalmic research, leadership, and innovation.
