“I have tried over the last year or so to focus on leadership, innovation, and advocacy aimed at delivering meaningful, system-level change within ophthalmology – particularly in how we communicate, adopt technology, and collaborate globally.
“A major highlight has been my Presidency of AECOS Europe, culminating in the largest European AECOS meeting to date, held in London in June 2025. My aim has been to strengthen AECOS as a platform where clinically relevant innovation, honest debate, and shared values between surgeons and industry can thrive – ultimately accelerating the responsible adoption of technologies that genuinely improve patient outcomes and not just in the industrialized world but to consider the value we bring globally, hoping to bring innovation and technology to help those who are underprivileged and need sight restoration and preservation.
“A central theme of my recent work has been advocacy for Lenspeak – a simplified, standardized approach to intraocular lens (IOL) nomenclature. I have argued that current IOL terminology is overly complex, inconsistent, and poorly aligned with how patients actually experience vision. Lenspeak is about clarity: language that ophthalmologists can use consistently, manufacturers can stand behind transparently, patients can understand meaningfully and regulators can assess objectively. My goal is to help shift the field toward a common language that reduces confusion, improves informed consent, and builds trust across all involved in cataract and refractive lens surgery.
“Innovation has also been a key focus. I co-developed and launched IMVIS (Infinite Medical Ventures Imaging System), a glasses-free, high-definition 3D imaging platform that digitises the slit-lamp examination. IMVIS allows real-time 3D visualization of the eye on tablets, phones, and displays, and enables remote review and collaboration. The broader ambition is to digitize every eye examination – improving continuity of care, enabling scalable teleophthalmology, transforming education, and creating high-quality datasets ready for AI-driven diagnostics.
“Alongside this, I continue to invest in and advocate for artificial intelligence solutions that reduce clinician burnout and improve quality of care, including structured, objective clinical data capture.”
