“Over the past year(s), my work has been driven by a simple but persistent motivation: to close the gap between academic innovation and meaningful impact for my patients in clinic. Too often, promising advances remain just theory – confined to academic papers and/or disconnected from real-world clinical complexity. My focus has been on building bridges between discovery, validation, and implementation.
For me, this meant developing scalable clinical and research infrastructures that allow advanced imaging, AI, and biomarker-driven insights to move from theory into clinical trials and into daily practice . By integrating cloud-based imaging, AI-ready data pipelines, and harmonized structures and procedures across large multi-site clinical networks, we have shown that high-quality research, rapid recruitment, standardized care (and therefore standardized data generation) can coexist.
Scientifically, my recent work has centered on redefining how we characterize disease activity and progression – particularly in macular disease and uveitis – by moving beyond crude endpoints toward biologically and functionally meaningful imaging and molecular markers. This includes international consensus efforts on imaging nomenclature, fibrosis and inflammatory phenotyping, and development of AI-driven biomarkers that better reflect patient outcomes.
In parallel, my role as biotech executive in clinical development has reinforced my understanding of the importance of designing better, innovative and disease-adapted studies and endpoints (beyond the historic “one size fit all” 15 letter gain) that regulators, clinicians, and – most importantly – patients can trust. Whether in antifibrotic strategies, photobiomodulation, or novel retinal endpoints, the goal is the same: therapies that do more than improving images or numbers – therapies that improve lives.
As I had mentors and supporters that helped me find my way in the research and clinical world – which fills me with deep gratitude – I love to educate and train young and motivated scientists and clinicians to continue developing exciting new knowledge and future applications.
