“The work of evaluating new intraocular lenses and other implantable ocular devices in preclinical laboratory studies, as well as describing complications that can be associated with such lenses and devices has the potential to benefit all ophthalmology professionals. My major motivation, though, is the potential benefit to patients on a broad national and international scale, helping ensure that what is available in the market is safe and effective. I particularly like to perform research that raises awareness of the ophthalmology community to new issues or complications in the field of anterior segment surgery, thus strategies of prevention and/or management can be swiftly devised through collaborative work. Another important motivation for me is the challenge to fill gaps, such as the development of a truly accommodating intraocular lens, which eventually incorporates associated properties allowing for postoperative, noninvasive power adjustment.”
