James Bainbridge is a surgeon-scientist leading translation of novel advanced therapies for the benefit of people affected by blinding retinal disease. In 2025, he reported positive outcomes of a new gene therapy for infants with a severe form of genetic sight impairment (The Lancet, February 22, 2025). This novel experimental treatment resulted in life-changing improvements in infants and young children affected by genetic deficiency of AIPL1, with dramatic benefit to their sight and their psychosocial development. The advance provided, for the first time, an effective treatment for the most severe form of childhood blindness, and a potential paradigm shift towards genetic intervention at the earliest stages of disease.
