STAAR Surgical will showcase the evolving role of its EVO Implantable Collamer® Lens (ICL) technology at the 44th ESCRS Congress (London, September 11–15, 2026).
More than four million ICLs have now been sold worldwide. EVO ICL received CE Mark approval in Europe in 2011 for the correction of myopia and astigmatism, followed by EVO+ ICL with an Aspheric (Extended Depth of Focus) Optic in 2017 and the presbyopia-correcting EVO Viva in 2020. European indications for EVO ICL have since expanded to include patients up to 60 years of age, as well as use as a supplemental, or “piggyback,” lens following cataract surgery.
Central to STAAR Surgical’s ESCRS program will be EVO Insights LIVE, a series of small-group, peer-to-peer sessions designed to encourage discussion between surgeons and experienced EVO users. Limited to 20 attendees per session, the program will address practical topics encountered in everyday clinical practice.
On Saturday, September 12, Ali Dulaimi will lead a session on EVO ICL Surgical Trouble Shooting from 10:00–10:45, followed by Scott Barnes discussing Reframing Postoperative EVO ICL Management: Rational Vault Evaluation & Optimized Clinical Decisions from 14:00–14:45. On Sunday, September 13, Belén Alfonso Bartolozzi will revisit postoperative EVO ICL management at 10:00, while Victor Derhartunian will examine Unlocking the Growth Potential with EVO ICL at 14:00. All sessions will take place in South Gallery Room 26.
EVO ICL will also feature within the wider ESCRS scientific program. At the Global Refractive Summit on Friday, Roger Zaldivar will discuss the relationship between ciliary sulcus anatomy, vault and centration of phakic IOLs, while Julie Schallhorn will address selection criteria for simultaneous bilateral phakic IOL implantation. Two presented posters on Saturday will examine vertical versus horizontal ICL implantation and phakic presbyopic intraocular lenses.
On Monday, a series of free papers will investigate topics including ICL versus implantable phakic contact lenses, comparison of ICL V5 with SMILE Pro, eight-year outcomes with a central-port EVO ICL, OCT-based sizing formulas for eyes requiring vault-related lens exchange, and outcomes with presbyopia-correcting ICLs.
Additional on-demand e-posters will explore image-guided toric ICL implantation, five-year outcomes across different anterior chamber depths, vertical versus horizontal implantation, visual quality with the V5 ICL, AI-based postoperative vault simulation and outcomes in low-to-moderate myopia.
The EVO ICL is manufactured from STAAR Surgical’s proprietary Collamer® material, a biocompatible collagen copolymer designed to provide optical quality, ultraviolet protection and long-term compatibility with the eye. Unlike corneal laser procedures, implantation does not require removal of corneal tissue, while the lens can also be removed or exchanged should a patient’s visual needs change.
