Optical device manufacturer Optos has appointed Alexandre “Alex” Montague as chief executive officer, marking a new leadership chapter for the ultra-widefield retinal imaging company.
The Dunfermline, UK-based business announced the appointment on June 9, describing Montague as a global healthcare and vision care executive with almost 25 years of leadership experience across ophthalmology, optics, medical technology, and eye care.
Montague joins Optos following his role as CEO of Hoya Vision Care, where he led a global organization of 20,000 employees across 35 subsidiaries. He has also held senior leadership positions at Essilor and Zeiss, building experience across ophthalmic devices, optics, vision care, and medical technology.
Optos said Montague’s appointment aligns with its mission to support earlier disease detection, prevention, and improved patient outcomes through retinal imaging innovation. The company, founded more than 30 years ago, is best known for its 200-degree single-capture ultra-widefield retinal imaging systems and optomap technology.
“Optos has a powerful sense of purpose and an extraordinary opportunity to continue advancing eye care worldwide,” Montague said. “The company’s commitment to innovation, clinical excellence, and enabling health care professionals to improve patient outcomes strongly resonates with me. I look forward to building on the well-established Optos foundation, supporting our customers, empowering our talented teams, and expanding our impact.”
He added that meaningful investment in patients, clinicians, and society would be central to the company’s next phase. “If we act early enough, we can change outcomes for entire generations,” he said.
Optos said it will continue to focus on scientific advancement, discovery, and technologies designed to help clinicians improve vision health globally.
The company reports more than 30,000 devices in use worldwide, with its technology supported by more than 4,000 clinical papers. Its systems are used to support the detection, management, and treatment of retinal and systemic disease signs visible in the retina, including retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.
Montague’s appointment places an experienced international ophthalmic leader at the helm as Optos looks to expand the reach and impact of ultra-widefield imaging in global eye care.
