Alcon has launched UNITY Cataract System (CS) in Canada, marking the latest expansion of its next-generation surgical platform and a key focus of the company’s presence at the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Montréal.
UNITY CS is Alcon’s standalone cataract surgical system and forms part of the company’s wider UNITY platform, which also includes UNITY Vitreoretinal Cataract System (VCS). The platform has already supported more than 285,000 procedures globally across 1,350 systems, according to the company.
Alcon said UNITY CS has been designed to improve surgical efficiency, consistency, and workflow in cataract procedures. The system uses a novel phacoemulsification modality intended to deliver up to two times faster nucleus removal compared with OZIL Torsional phaco, with a reported 40 percent reduction in energy delivered into the eye. The platform also includes a phaco handpiece that estimates temperature at the incision site.
The launch comes as Alcon showcased a broader portfolio of surgical and therapeutic technologies at COS 2026, including UNITY VCS, the Valeda photobiomodulation device for early and intermediate dry age-related macular degeneration, and Clareon PanOptix Pro.
Mark Newson, Country Manager and Head of Surgical at Alcon Canada, said COS 2026 represented an “exciting milestone” for the company as it advances surgical innovation in Canada. “With UNITY CS, we are bringing forward technology designed to help surgeons and surgical teams operate with greater efficiency, consistency, and confidence in cataract surgery while supporting a smoother workflow in the operating room,” Newson said.
Alcon said UNITY VCS and UNITY CS are part of the Alcon Vision Suite, a portfolio intended to help eye care professionals improve clinic and operating room efficiency.
The UNITY platform has also received international recognition, with UNITY VCS named overall winner in the 2026 BIG Innovation Awards and receiving a Silver Edison Award in the Surgical Robotics & Precision Therapy category.
Alcon said the Canadian launch reflects its continued focus on building a connected surgical innovation platform for ophthalmology.
