In Conversation With… George Waring IV

Whilst in Barcelona for the XXXIII Congress of the ESCRS 2015, Mark Hillen, editor of The Ophthalmologist, invited key participants of the conference to take part in an exciting new video project: “In Conversation With...”, an ongoing series of informal interviews with some of the biggest personalities in ophthalmology in glorious settings around the globe.

Next up: George Waring, who was drawn to ophthalmology after attaining degrees in economics and environmental sciences, and is now Director of Refractive Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. When we met in the Presidential Suite of the Hesperia Tower Hotel in Barcelona, Spain, we discussed his current research focus in the field of cataract refractive surgery, in particular in presbyopia and his focus on pushing the limits of visual potential, by understanding advanced diagnostics and quality of vision. He speaks animatedly of the evolution of advanced diagnostics and offers his advice on dealing with different patient groups – from patient selection, through to treatment and expectations management – and comments that, while only 2 percent of doctors feel comfortable implanting presbyopic IOLs, he believes this can and will improve.
