Whilst in Barcelona for the XXXIII Congress of the ESCRS 2015, Mark Hillen, editor of The Ophthalmologist, invited key participants of the conference to take part in an exciting new video project: “In Conversation With...”, an ongoing series of informal interviews with some of the biggest personalities in ophthalmology in glorious settings around the globe.

Finally, we speak with Florian Kretz, Consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Heidelberg and one of the lead surgeons at the Eyeclinic Ahaus-Raesfeld-Rheine, Ahaus Germany. When we met in the Presidential Suite of the Hesperia Tower Hotel in Barcelona, Spain, our conversation saw us discussing how he ensures patients are happy with the results of premium cataract surgery, and what warning signs to look out for when selecting patients for surgery. He recalls experiences of dealing with difficult patients and talks of the advances in imaging and biometry, admitting that more innovation is still needed to fully optimize outcomes, but he doesn’t think it will be too long before that happens. He also explains why performing intraoperative biometry doesn’t makes logistical sense.
