Image of the Month
Titled “Inside the human eye”, this Wellcome Trust award-winning image was taken by Peter Maloca, of the OCT research group of the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Basel, Switzerland. Peter is a trained ophthalmologist. His team has developed a new postprocessing method that allows them to extract noise from images to enhance image quality. The technology has been applied on normal eyes and recently for very small eye tumors.
The image shows a 3D model of the outer choroidal vessels, artificially illuminated and textured. The 3D reconstruction was achieved by removing speckle-noise from 256 swept-source optical coherence tomography cross-sections of a healthy human eye. The vertical size is 100 micron.
