About Jorge L. Alió del Barrio

Jorge L. Alió del Barrio graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2008. He specialized in ophthalmology at the University Hospital of Ramón y Cajal (Madrid, 2009-2013) and went on to complete Corneal Fellowships at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital (2013-2014, London, UK) and Moorfields Eye Hospital (2014-2015, London, UK).

Jorge currently works as a cornea, cataract, ocular surface and refractive surgery surgeon at Vissum (Miranza Group) in Alicante, Spain. He is also Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology in the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Alicante. He has more than 180 publications, including scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals (>110) and international scientific books (he currently has an h-index of 29). In September 2018, he graduated as a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology-Specialist Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (FEBOS-CR), and in 2022 was awarded with the “Premio Arruga” by the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field. He became a Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgeons & Visual Sciences (FWCRS) in June 2023.

Of his many mentors, Jorge says, “I should be grateful to all of them. At different moments of my career they shaped the professional I am today, from my residency consultants at Ramon y Cajal Hospital in Madrid to those from my fellowships in London. Special mention [should be made] to my former cornea co-fellows at Moorfields, since probably I learnt more from them than from anybody else during those years. Today they are not only colleagues but also [lifelong] friends. And of course, I can't forget to mention my father [previous Power Lister, Jorge Alió] who helped to guide my journey into refractive surgery and is an example of an inexhaustible spirit.”

Jorge believes that the most exciting thing happening in the cataract & refractive space right now is “the introduction of newer optical designs for multifocal IOLs skipping diffractive optics” capable of reducing the current photic phenomena while still allowing for full range of focus.

Away from his work, he confesses that, deep down, he is really “a nerdy freak.” He says, “I spend my hobby time painting Warhammer war miniatures, which actually complements my surgical skills perfectly. Sometimes miniature painting requires more precision than a complex corneal surgery!”
