About Renato Ambrósio Jr.

What area of research do you find most exciting right now?

I am particularly excited about integrating artificial intelligence (AI) in ophthalmology. Advancements in AI are transforming diagnostic imaging, enhancing personalized refractive surgical outcomes, and paving the way for our version of precision medicine. Additionally, I am enthusiastic about integrating and applying ancient philosophy alongside artificial intelligence, especially in refractive surgery. Inspired by the insightful article on the Virtue Compass in The Ophthalmologist, this approach champions the idea that the human touch and skills should be empowered by AI, not replaced. The concept I refer to as (A²I)² – combining applied artificial intelligence (the “how”) with applied ancient intelligence (the “whys”) – forms the foundation of this innovative perspective.

What advice would you give yourself if you were starting off in the ophthalmology space?

I would highly encourage embracing a mindset of lifelong learning and resilience. Achieving excellence is not about reaching a fixed destiny but following a continuous north star. It is crucial to remain open to new concepts and technological innovations, applying critical thinking to discern whether emerging trends are a genuine evolution or just hype. Above all, patient care must always be the highest priority, ensuring every clinical and research endeavor is anchored in safety and efficacy.
