About Joel S. Schuman

What is the most exciting thing happening in glaucoma right now?

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) are still very hot in the glaucoma space, and glaucoma is being increasingly seen as a surgical disease even in areas with excellent access to care and medications. Evidence shows the benefit of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) as primary therapy, and new data suggest the importance of early surgery, particularly in advanced disease.

Make a bold prediction for the future of glaucoma treatment.

Regenerative ophthalmology will make significant inroads in the next decade, whether through stem cell therapy, gene therapy and gene editing, or through small molecule delivery, including through controlled release technologies.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Do what you love and consider important and needed. Pay attention to your patients – they are trying to tell you something. Keep an open mind.
