About H. Burkhard Dick

What major trends in cataract and refractive surgery are catching your attention right now?

The variety of IOLs has increased immensely, and most likely will continue to do so. Fortunately, at the ESCRS we introduced a new, function-based terminology that will help keep track of new concepts. Probably, in the future we will see a truly accommodative IOL. And better, more successful techniques to treat high hyperopia with corneal refractive interventions.

In what ways do you think artificial intelligence and machine learning will impact cataract & refractive surgery?

AI is an enormous force in bringing our field of medicine – like so many others – into a future that is full of challenges. To name just a few points: Workflow from pre-operative diagnostics and planning to further refinement of IOL alignment and optimizing of astigmatism management will be rendered immensely efficient. Automated biometry-to-surgical-planning workflows will allow seamless transfer of data from diagnostic devices to the operating room. This reduces manual data entry errors and speeds up the decision-making process. AI-driven preoperative education and surgical simulation for both patients and trainees will better inform the former and lead to fewer preoperative questions.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Always be patient and stick to your own goals. Be confident that in the end you will achieve your goals in life – even, no, especially, under difficult circumstances. And never, ever, give up!
