What major trends in cataract and refractive surgery are catching your attention right now?

I believe the next generation of refractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) in the extended depth of focus (EDOF) family will dramatically reduce dysphotopsias and loss of contrast while providing markedly improved midrange and even near vision. These lenses will increase the penetration of presbyopic IOLs to ophthalmologists who were not comfortable with the adverse events associated with multifocal IOLs.

In what ways do you think AI and machine learning will impact cataract & refractive surgery?

Artificial intelligence will seamlessly improve refractive outcomes in cataract and refractive surgery by improving accuracy and helping reduce or eliminate patients who are at risk of suboptimal outcomes.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Truthfully, I really would not change very much. My career has been a joyous experience. If I was going to give myself a little advice I believe I would worry less about the little things and spend more time developing relationships with colleagues, industry and, most importantly, friends and family. These relationships are the highlight of my career.
