What is a little-known fact about you?

I enjoy participating in and watching sports. In my youth, I played all sports, but mostly basketball and tennis. I greatly enjoyed these sports growing up.

If you weren’t an ophthalmologist, what would you be doing instead?

I think I would enjoy being an athletic coach or playing sports in a “senior-citizen” league.

How do you think AI and machine learning will impact ophthalmology?

I think that AI will have a great impact in screening fundus photographs in patients with diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Using AI, ophthalmologists could more efficiently use their time and knowledge to provide better care for patients. Likewise, large clinical studies on natural history and benefits of treatment can be performed with AI. Machine learning will continue to improve and allow residents and fellows in training to improve their knowledge base, which will secondarily impact the quality of care of patients in the field of ophthalmology.
