Why did you decide to pursue ophthalmology/your subspecialty?

The physics.

Who is your role model?

My mother, who was one of the early female physicians in Iran; she faced extraordinary challenges to pursue a career as a woman in medicine.

What is your proudest contribution to ophthalmology/your subspecialty?

The cohort of bright people I have trained and, of course, the patients I have helped.

What do you credit most for your success over the course of your career?

Tenacity, passion, and a bit of luck.

What would you like to see change in ophthalmology/your subspecialty over the next 10 years – and why?

More innovative career pathways to retain and promote talented women.

If you weren’t an ophthalmologist, what would you be doing?

My Dream job would be All Blacks Head coach.

If you could restart your career, would you do anything differently?

Spend more time in art-house cinemas.

When you are no longer practicing, what do you want your legacy to be?

I was completely committed to my patients and colleagues.

Challenge established thinking.
