About Marian Macsai

Chief Medical Officer at Oyster Point Pharma Inc., Illinois, USA

What is your proudest professional achievement?

My proudest achievement has been contributing to the field through service to my patients, eye banking, research, and teaching the next generation of residents and colleagues. Now, by working in the pharmaceutical industry, I plan to have an even larger impact on patient care by providing new treatments for diseases of the ocular surface.

Outside of ophthalmology, what makes you happy?

I love to spend time with my family, both nuclear and extended. In addition, I enjoy fiber arts, photography, travel, and spending time with friends.

Why is it important to celebrate women in the field this way?

We need to celebrate women in ophthalmology as more than 50 percent of incoming medical students are women. But we actually need to celebrate the diversity in our field and the broader understanding and outreach this brings to each of us, as we move through the global challenges of preserving and restoring vision worldwide. Nothing has made our global interdependence clearer than the COVID-19 pandemic we are all facing. Our planet and our future depend on our working together, which is made easier with our support of diversity and mutual understanding.
