About Hilda Capó

John T. Flynn Professor of Ophthalmology Chair, Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, Florida, USA

Why is it important to celebrate women in ophthalmology with the 2021 Power List?

Powerful positions for many years have been associated with men as opposed to women, so celebrating women in ophthalmology brings us closer to attaining gender equality in our profession. This 2021 Power List not only honors women who have accomplished success in their career but also inspires the younger generations to break the societal stereotypes of power and gender and redefine the traditional power structures.

What can be done to make the field more diverse?

We first need to recognize the advantages of a diverse working group and create awareness of the disparities with regards to gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. Sponsoring and mentoring minorities, as well as actively setting up representation targets by the leaders will help achieve the desired diversity.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

It is difficult to identify the proudest professional achievement as I have relished every accomplishment along the way, whether big or small. Watching those that I have trained and mentored achieve success may be some of the most rewarding experiences as an academician and educator.

Outside of work, what makes you happy?

Outside of work what makes me the happiest is spending time with my family and friends.
