About Caroline R. Baumal

Professor of Ophthalmology, Tufts University School of Medicine, Retinal Surgery, New England Eye Center, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Why do you think it is important that we celebrate women in ophthalmology with the 2021 Power List?

The number of women in the subspecialty of ophthalmology is increasing, so it’s important to recognize their contributions so they can be mentors for future generations.

What can be done to make the field more diverse?

I believe that access to our global ophthalmology community with the internet will increase diversity in our field.

What is your proudest professional achievement?

Mentoring students and teaching ophthalmology residents and vitreoretinal fellows in our academic setting has been very important to me. I am always proud of the careers of our students and I was very honored to receive the Crystal Apple award in 2020 from the American Society of Retinal Surgeons after being nominated by past students.

Outside of work, what makes you happy?

Spending time with friends, traveling with my family, hiking, and yoga.
