About Jeffrey L Goldberg
Your three wishes?
Ongoing joy and health for my family; an end to world hunger and war; and an opportunity to contribute something meaningful to the future.
The most serendipitous moment of your career?
I am a big believer in serendipity, and both in taking advantage of the doors that open seemingly at random, and also in enjoying these moments. For my PhD I joined the lab of a brand-new assistant professor at Stanford, Ben Barres, who ended up being a leading developmental neurobiologist and a fantastic mentor, that was certainly something to be grateful for through the rest of my life!
What was the most unexpected turn your career took?
I finished residency excited about molecular genetics and thinking I’d do a retina and genetics fellowship. Then I went to a research and clinical meeting about retinal ganglion cell biology and glaucoma, and realized that the huge unmet needs in glaucoma were a perfect match for the focus of my research interests. Thankfully, my glaucoma mentors in Miami welcomed me into fellowship training!
