About Greg Hageman
Your three wishes?
That we employ our collective skills and knowledge to more rapidly develop treatments to prevent or halt the progression of age-related macular degeneration, so as to alleviate the suffering of so many individuals; that there be more robust, disease-focused collaborations between scientists and clinicians; and that I was much younger.
Piece of advice you would give to your younger self?
To focus more intensely on the problems at hand and to collaborate with large, interdisciplinary and collaborative teams.
What was the most unexpected turn your career took?
I was trained as a marine scientist. At the time it became clear that a career change was in my future, I thought a lot about how my wife’s grandmother’s struggle with AMD had greatly diminished the quality of her remaining years. This encouraged me to focus on understanding the biology of AMD. It has been a wonderful and worthwhile career and I have never looked back.
