The most unexpected turn your career took?
My initial aspiration was to become a strabismologist. I really liked strabismus surgery, especially the newer transpositional procedures for complex cases. I still enjoy thinking and reading around the field even though I no longer encounter it in the day to day. I tell residents and fellows that I was led astray by the OCT and the rapid pace in which diagnostic imaging was developing in ophthalmology, which landed me in sub-specialty training of medical retina. My current focus on telemedicine was a natural next step. I feel that it is the intersection of hardware, software and AI that will make eye care universally accessible and useful for everyone.
