Rudy Nuijts identified the etiology of toxic endothelial cell destruction after cataract surgery (Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome). His current research interests include innovations in corneal, cataract and refractive surgery, particularly the use of femtosecond lasers and transcleral drug delivery. He is treasurer of ESCRS, and serves on the Corneal and Educational Committee
