IRIS Acquisition

Topcon Healthcare acquires IRIS to expand retinal screening in primary care

At the end of July, Topcon Healthcare – a digital healthcare company focused on advanced imaging, diagnostics and artificial intelligence tools – acquired Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS), a US cloud-based retinal screening technology. The move strengthens Topcon’s presence in primary care, and advances its mission of early disease detection through connected, data-driven care.

IRIS is widely recognized for integrating retinal screenings into routine clinical settings, enabling primary care physicians, health centers, and health systems to efficiently detect undiagnosed eye disease. Its platform combines seamless EMR integration, AI-assisted diagnostics, and camera-agnostic flexibility to screen for diabetic retinopathy and other conditions at scale.

By incorporating IRIS into its Healthcare from the Eye™ initiative, Topcon aims to reinforce coordination between primary care providers (PCPs) and eye care providers (ECPs). The acquisition supports a two-way referral model in which PCPs can identify at-risk patients earlier, while ECPs can use AI-analyzed ocular data to uncover systemic or neurological disease and refer patients back to primary care for further evaluation.

“This acquisition reflects our long-term strategy to connect the continuum of care through intelligent platforms that bring together data, workflow, and real-time decision support,” says Jacques Gilbert, Chief Strategy & Business Development Officer at Topcon.

The IRIS platform will also enhance Harmony®, Topcon’s cloud-based connected care platform, by adding referral and communication capabilities to improve compliance and reduce patient leakage.
