Potential new therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease. A new Disease Models & Mechanisms study has investigated how glucose metabolism in glial cells influences neurodegeneration in a Drosophila (fruit fly) model of Alzheimer’s disease. The Tokyo-based researchers found that expressing human Tau protein in fly retinal cells led to neurodegeneration marked by inflammation and glial abnormalities. Enhancing glucose uptake specifically in pigment glial cells significantly reduced inflammation, inclusion formation, and photoreceptor degeneration. Link
Links between DR Severity and diabetes diagnosis age. A Scientific Reports study has investigated the relationship between age at diabetes diagnosis (ADD) and the risk and severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Using data gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database, the researchers – based at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, China – found that younger ADD was significantly associated with a higher risk and greater severity of DR. Genetic analysis confirmed a likely causal relationship, highlighting the importance of early screening and intensive management for individuals diagnosed with diabetes at a younger age. Link
