LBN for glaucoma. Frontiers in Ophthalmology has published The Canadian Latanoprostene Bunod Early Experience Program (LEEP), a study evaluating the real-world effectiveness of LBN 0.024% for open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Looking at 653 patients, the study concluded that both patient and physician satisfaction with LBN were high, with prior selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) history not significantly diminishing LBN's IOP-lowering efficacy. The findings support LBN as a valuable addition to glaucoma therapy across diverse clinical settings. Link
DED detection. A recent longitudinal study assessed young adults with and without evaporative dry eye disease (DED), finding that over 90 percent showed at least one sign of ocular surface disease, with significant progression over a year in redness, lid wiper epitheliopathy, and blink rate. The findings highlight the importance of early detection and intervention for DED, emphasizing modifiable risk factors like screen use, contact lens wear, and stress. Link
Life’s Essential 8 and AMD Risk. A large-scale Chinese cohort study using UK Biobank data has found that higher cardiovascular health scores, as measured by the American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 (LE8), significantly reduced the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), even among individuals with a high genetic risk. Key protective factors included physical activity, smoking cessation, and blood glucose control, while lipid levels were positively associated with AMD risk. It was noted that the benefits of strong cardiovascular health were most pronounced in younger individuals, women, and nondrinkers, highlighting the value of early, targeted lifestyle interventions.
