A study by researchers at the University of Oxford evaluated the reliability of scotopic microperimetry using the S-MAIA device among 39 healthy adults. The aim was to establish normative data for future clinical trials focused on retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. Results showed that 82% of tests met reliability criteria, with mean sensitivities for cyan and red being approximately 20 dB and 21 dB, respectively. Despite its feasibility, scotopic microperimetry is affected by variability and cognitive demands, suggesting the need for improvements before widespread use in clinical settings.
