HOYA Lens UK has announced the completion of a three-year fundraising initiative, raising £50,000 to support the construction of a new community eye care center in India, in partnership with international eye care charity, Orbis.
The Green Vision Centre (GVC) will further Orbis' mission to strengthen eye care services in rural India, and reflects HOYA’s commitment to advancing global eye health and tackling avoidable sight loss through sustainable, community-led initiatives.
India has the highest number of people living with blindness and vision impairment in the world. In many areas, traveling to the nearest hospital can mean a journey of hundreds of miles, often across difficult terrain.
Orbis Green Vision Centers bring essential eye screenings and primary care closer to underserved communities. Providing access to eye care services for an estimated 90,000 adults and children within India’s Northeastern state of Meghalaya, the Green Vision Centre is equipped with solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, and telemedicine software, making it both environmentally sustainable and technologically advanced.
“HOYA’s commitment will help to bring vital eye care services to a previously underserved area, transforming lives through the gift of sight," said Kate Gannon, Director of Program Fundraising at Orbis UK.
In the last three years, HOYA Lens UK has completed a range of creative fundraising activities to hit the £50,000 target, including a "Journey for Vision," which saw 80 staff members collectively walk 5,000 miles, which is the distance from Wrexham (UK) to India, in just 19 days.
Contributions from HOYA’s MiYOSMART lens sales and contactless donation terminals further boosted the total funds.
HOYA Lens UK’s Managing Director, Martin Batho, commented::“The Orbis Green Vision Centre is a fantastic project and one that will leave a lasting legacy, bringing vital sight care services to many thousands of people over the years and decades come.” https://gbr.orbis.org/en/corporate-partners/hoya
