Heidelberg Engineering is expanding its growing healthcare IT portfolio with Heidelberg AppWay. In partnership with software as a service (SaaS) and AI companies, Heidelberg Engineering has launched an unprecedented workflow solution for research and clinic, designed to enhance eye care professionals’ access to innovative analysis tools to aid in their decision making. Heidelberg AppWay is embedded into the image management platform HEYEX 2 and provides a secure, simple, and seamless gateway for secure data exchange with ophthalmic “apps” that help further diagnostic insights.
UNCOVER streamlined access
Heidelberg AppWay and its access to ophthalmic apps was launched at EURETINA 2022 to provide eye care specialists with secure data access to innovative analytics software systems that support retinal diagnostics and therapeutic monitoring. “The services of our app partners in combination with the powerful data of our imaging platforms will empower eye care professionals to uncover even more details of the eye,” says Krysten Williams, Global Head of Marketing and Education at Heidelberg Engineering.

UNCOVER precise fluid activity measurements
RetInSight, a global pioneer in AI-based retinal image analysis and provider of certified solutions for use in clinical routine and reading center services, offers easy access to its MDR CE-certified Fluid Monitor via Heidelberg AppWay. Fluid parameters are the most important biomarkers in the routine monitoring of patients with nAMD, according to Ursula Schmidt-Erfurth, Professor of Ophthalmology, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. She explains that the clinicians’ access to “a fast, precise, and reliable tool will improve quality and workflow of challenging therapeutic tasks in modern ophthalmology,” including the management of neovascular AMD. By precisely identifying, localizing, and quantifying IRF, SRF and PED in the central 1-mm and 6-mm macular areas, Fluid Monitor supports the optimization and personalization of therapy, with the aim to improve patient outcomes and clinical efficiency. It will bring our ability to understand and treat disease to a substantially higher level by introducing precision into decision-making.

UNCOVER biomarkers in the retina
Heidelberg AppWay also offers access to a portfolio of AI tools offered by RetinAI Medical AG. The Swiss company develops software solutions to accelerate clinical, research, and pharmaceutical workflows, using advanced analytics and visualization platforms. Its AI models fill a growing need for scanning and processing images for enhanced clinical information, in light of the exponential growth of retinal disease globally. With Heidelberg AppWay, eye care professionals can send their OCT volume scans for analysis with RetinAI’s apps to gain additional diagnostic insights into eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cystoid macular edema, and retinal vein occlusion. The underlying technology helps both healthcare providers and clinical research professionals compute imaging biomarkers. Both Heidelberg Engineering and RetinAI focus on improving the patient standard of care. “Our AI tools are enablers to increase efficiency in research and clinical studies and we expect they can also improve medication and treatment regimens for patients by providing enhanced data insights,” says Carlos Ciller, PhD, CEO of RetinAI.
