IOL Fixation Made Simple

The new AMON Forceps Needle helps solve the problem of haptic externalization

Given the growth in demand for cataract surgery it’s no surprise that IOL tools and techniques have become more varied and sophisticated. However, with these advances come new issues that must be addressed. One of the many challenges of IOL placement is ensuring that the placed lens maintains a fixed position. There is always a risk that IOL haptics can slip out of place without forceps because externalization can be tricky – especially with newer surgical methods such as the widely adopted Yamane technique. Overcoming these challenges depends upon continuing medical and technical innovation.

The new AMON Forceps Needle is a hollow needle (or cannula) with an integrated forceps that can greatly simplify intrascleral IOL fixation. With one maneuver, surgeons can use the needle to puncture tissue and the integrated forceps to grasp an object to externalize it through the same access point. The beveled needle tip is perfectly designed for sclerotomies and the high-force forceps minimize the risk of IOL haptics falling back into the anterior segment. Thus far, no other ophthalmic-surgical manufacturer has integrated fully functioning micro-forceps into a sharp cannula. The AMON Forceps Needle is already available as a reusable 27G, but single-use 27G and 30G sizes will be launched in 2023. The full range of microsurgical applications is not limited to IOL fixation, but could encompass iris fixation of IOLs, fixation of capsular segments, and even Gore-Tex and Prolene sutures.
