The ISOPURE from BVI is a premium monofocal IOL that opens the door for cataract surgeons to treat a wider range of patients, extending depth of vision without compromising on monofocal IOL

Since their release, extended depth of focus (EDoF) IOLs have increased in popularity. Based on clinical outcomes and improved visual acuity at intermediate distances – this IOL type is designed for people with an active lifestyle.

ISOPURE is a premium monofocal IOL that is suitable for cataract patients and designed to provide functional intermediate vision in all conditions.  is is without compromising on quality of vision, yet with the simplicity of a monofocal IOL. ISOPURE features a new optic design, with a patented polynomial complex surface design across the full optic – enabling an increased depth of focus from 48 percent up to 86 percent compared to a standard monofocal depending on SA of the cornea (1).

Unlike a standard monofocal IOL, where nominal power focuses the light rays on a single point providing a sharp image at only one distance, the ISOPURE combines a unique anterior and posterior surface pro le of increased negative spherical aberration, that is  ne-tuned for each diopter on the whole optic. This design ensures that central and peripheral rays entering the pupil do not converge identically, thus causing an extension of the foci on the retina. Succession of convergence points extends the focal points and provides depth of focus.

Optical bench testing showed that the ISOPURE achieves about 1.00 D increase range of vision in a 3 mm pupil.  The first published clinical study with six months follow-up concluded that ISOPURE provided and excellent distance vision and intermediate distances along with high contrast sensitivity and good tolerance of residual refractive cylinder (2).

This all results in ISOPURE opening the door to a wider range of patients, from a measured improvement in range of vision without compromising over the quality of existing monofocal IOLs. At the 2021 ESCRS in Amsterdam, Kristof Vandekerckhove presented the ultrafast take-o of ISOPURE in his practice with over 800 implantations in the past 18 months – now representing 57 percent of monofocal IOLs that he has implanted. His monofocal cataract patients are now benefiting from uncompromised distance vision and extended range of uncorrected vision, including intermediate and surprise near vision.
