July 2021

Welcome to the summer issue of The Ophthalmologist, historically our most beautiful issue of the year, showcasing the stunning Images of Ophthalmology. Our Upfront section features the latest industry and research, from the legacy of eye surgeon and gay rights activist, to click-based echolocation used to help people with vision impairment. In our opinion column, In My View, Larry Benjamin argues that virtual surgical training can transform the field of ophthalmology, provided certain rules are followed, and George Spaeth asks what qualities a surgical mentor requires to adequately pass the knowledge and skills to the next generation of ophthalmic surgeons. In this issue’s In Practice section, M. Edward Wilson explores the new drop aimed to prevent intraoperative miosis and reduce postoperative pain in pediatric cataract surgery patients, while in NextGen, Peter K. Kaiser investigates how close we might be to a new therapeutic for geographic atrophy, and Gilad Litvin tells the story of the new corneal implant that was recently used to return sight to a patient. In Profession, Sohaib Rufai talks about his book, offering advice on how to secure an ophthalmic specialist training post. Finally, we sit down with Sarah Coupland, leader of the Liverpool Ocular Oncology Research Group, Professor and Chair of Pathology at the University of Liverpool, UK. I hope you enjoy reading this issue!
