"Sometimes something artistic comes from an unexpected place and slaps you in the face," says Richard Koplin, Co-Director of the Cataract Service at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mt. Sinai, NY, USA. He has been a clinician and inventor of ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical devices for 30 years.
As he describes it, “I was adjusting the operating microscope in preparation of initiating a routine cataract procedure, when I was stopped in my tracks by the odd presentation of the conjunctival melanosis at the limbus in this case. It took very little imagination to conjure up two large and formidable animals butting heads; bison came to mind and in an online search of photographic images that might justify my flight to fantasy, I came upon this doppelganger.”
