Simplifying Surgery with Swiss Precision

ViPer’s simultaneous indenting and transscleral illumination gives retinal surgeons more autonomy

To make operating in the periphery possible for vitreoretinal surgeons, the tissue must be physically moved and simultaneously illuminated. The most common solutions to facilitate these conditions have included unlit dents made by an assistant or the use of a chandelier light. Neither approach was optimal – and that is why Oertli® decided to use its experience in developing precision ophthalmic surgery tools to address this unmet surgical need.

Oertli has been developing and manufacturing high-quality devices and instruments for cataract and glaucoma surgery – as well as vitrectomy – for over 60 years. Together with Matthias Bolz, Director of the Ophthalmology Clinic at Kepler University Hospital in Linz, Austria, the company designed and produced ViPer™, the Visible Periphery Illuminated Scleral Indentor.

In short, ViPer makes vitreoretinal surgery easier, safer, and more efficient. By ensuring simultaneous indenting and transscleral illumination in the posterior eye segment, the surgeon is presented with an improved view, significantly simplifying interventions in the periphery. Made of semi-transparent material, the tool allows for glare-free surgery without backscattered light. And it can be used multiple times during the same surgery, thanks to closed geometry.

Where else has ViPer proven its utility? In retinal detachment cases, it makes small defects more visible. It can also be used in cataract surgery where it allows an intraocular fundus view when there is no endo-light. ViPer can also be used in cases of capsule rupture and during scleral buckling – for “easy buckling.”

The indentor is available with every endo illuminator and in all vitrectomy packs from Oertli.
