1. Ozempic Blindness Risks

The news that popular prescription antidiabetic/weight loss medication, Ozempic, increased the risk of diabetic patients developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) was our number one most read article of 2024.

2. What should you charge?

Next up was a popular choice for ophthalmologists who might run – or aspire to run! – their own practice. Rod Solar, Director of Practice Development at LiveseySolar, London, UK, offered his advice on what might be considered a fair price to charge for eye surgery.

3. Embracing Drop-Free Treatment

Nicole Fram’s piece on how sustained-release treatments can reduce patients’ drop burden and increase physician efficiency was next on the list. Here, Fram, listed the advantages of adding fewer drops to a patient’s regimen, as well as considering the question: will our ophthalmic future be drop-free?

4. The Year 2035 and the 30 Percent Deficit

In our fourth most popular article of the year, Shriji Patel, a researcher at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, examined the present and future state of the US ophthalmology workforce. Patel believes ophthalmologists must now take a multi-faceted approach in order to address the workforce challenges that lie ahead.

5. The Art of Eyes 2024: Volume I

Our ever-popular annual Art of Eyes feature came fifth in the list this year. Volume 1 saw a wide array of artistic submissions of images, illustrations, and paintings from those working across the ophthalmic spectrum.

6. Laser Focus

Perhaps unsurprisingly, our Sitting Down With interview with femtosecond laser pioneer, Tibor Juhasz, made the list this year. Juhasz discussed his extensive career to date, and his pioneering work bringing femtosecond laser technology to the world's attention.

7. Snellen Versus ETDRS

Originally published in our sister publication, The New Optometrist, Winston Posvar and Andrew D. Pucker’s discussion on the importance of understanding the key differences between Snellen and ETDRS (Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study) visual acuity testing for patients proved to be a big hit with our readers.

8. The Ophthalmologist’s Time Machine: Chapter 16

Our regular Time Machine series is always a reader favorite. This instalment saw the team delving into the history of glaucoma, before the 1851 invention of the ophthalmoscope made things a whole lot easier for eye surgeons!

9. The Ophthalmologist Power List 2024 is Live!

Our 2024 Power List saw readers charging to the site to view our annual, world-renowned ranking of the top 100 most inspirational and influential clinicians, scientists, and leaders in ophthalmology. Were there any names you thought should be on there? If so, nominations are now open for our Power List 2025. You can nominate your chosen candidates here.

10. Recognizing Global Education Impact

Now in its second year, the Global Education Impact feature garnered an engaged and interactive audience, with the nominations page for the initiative rounding off our top 10 most popular pages of 2024. This year, our initiative featured profiles of six institutions committed to developing access to eye care and ophthalmology education around the world. See the final six institutions here.
