The news that popular prescription antidiabetic/weight loss medication, Ozempic, increased the risk of diabetic patients developing non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) was our number one most read article of 2024.

Here, Fram, listed the advantages of adding fewer drops to a patient’s regimen, as well as considering the question: will our ophthalmic future be drop-free?

In our fourth most popular article of the year, Shriji Patel, a researcher at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, examined the present and future state of the US ophthalmology workforce. Patel believes ophthalmologists must now take a multi-faceted approach in order to address the workforce challenges that lie ahead.

5. The Art of Eyes 2024: Volume I
 

Our ever-popular annual Art of Eyes feature came fifth in the list this year. Volume 1 saw a wide array of artistic submissions of images, illustrations, and paintings from those working across the ophthalmic spectrum.

6. Laser Focus
 

Perhaps unsurprisingly, our Sitting Down With interview with femtosecond laser pioneer, Tibor Juhasz, made the list this year. Juhasz discussed his extensive career to date, and his pioneering work bringing femtosecond laser technology to the world's attention.

7. Snellen Versus ETDRS
 

Originally published in our sister publication, The New Optometrist, Winston Posvar and Andrew D. Pucker’s discussion on the importance of understanding the key differences between Snellen and ETDRS (Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study) visual acuity testing for patients proved to be a big hit with our readers.

Our regular Time Machine series is always a reader favorite. This instalment saw the team delving into the history of glaucoma, before the 1851 invention of the ophthalmoscope made things a whole lot easier for eye surgeons!
