Her nomination read: “Zaina Al-Mohtaseb earned her medical degree with honors from Baylor College of Medicine and was voted AOA. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine and was elected Chief Resident in her final year of training. She finished her training at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (the top program in the nation) with a fellowship in cornea/external disease, cataract and refractive surgery. She has excelled in three main aspects during her career; clinical/surgical, education, and research. Her work involves the medical and surgical management of patients with cornea, cataract, and refractive issues.

Al-Mohtaseb is productive clinically and surgically, winning the BCM Early Career Faculty Award for Excellence in Patient Care in 2018. She is an adopter of new surgical and clinical techniques (DMEK corneal transplantation and double needle scleral lens fixation) and as a result, has become the go to clinician for many referring optometrists and ophthalmologists. She has won the “Top Doctors” in Houston for the past three years, BCM Women of Excellence Award, the National Award Outstanding Leader in Ophthalmology, and most recently, the Rising Star in Ophthalmology National Award. She has authored more than 37 peer reviewed publications, 40 poster/paper presentations, and 33 non-peer reviewed publications such as book chapters, online journals, and articles.”
